Safety
Is Charter Bank Online Banking secure?
The security of your financial information is of utmost importance to us. In order to safeguard the information available in Charter Bank Online Banking, we have taken several precautions to ensure your safety:
- We require strong encryption. Encryption is the method of "scrambling" information to protect its transmission over the Internet. You must use a browser that contains 128-bit encryption.
- You choose your password. It can be any combination of letters and numbers between 4-16 characters. You must enter your password every time you want to access your account information. It should be kept completely confidential, known only to you.
- We use Advanced Authentication, incorporating a secret image, phrase and challenge questions, as well as computer authentication.
- We have established firewalls. To build a barrier between an internal network and the Internet, a firewall is installed. The firewall becomes the only way anyone can access the network from outside. Because everything entering the network has to pass through the firewall, it controls all traffic between the network and everything outside it. Therefore, unauthorized users cannot access your account information.
- We have a session time-out feature. If you remain inactive within your Charter Bank Online Banking session for 15 minutes, the system will automatically require your User ID and password to be entered before allowing any new transactions.

What FDIC update has been issued recently?
Here’s what you need to know about the most recent FDIC ruling and how it impacts your Charter Bank accounts:
The FDIC permanently increased the amount of insurance it provides on eligible savings deposits from $100,000 to $250,000 per depositor. This means that consumer and business deposit accounts, such as checking, savings, CDs, and money market accounts, are insured for up to $250,000*.
*The deposit insurance coverage limits refer to the total of all deposits that an account holder (or accounts holders) has at each FDIC insured bank.
All funds in a “noninterest-bearing transaction account” are insured in full by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation from December 31, 2010 through December 31, 2012. This temporary unlimited coverage is in addition to, and separate from, the coverage of at least $250,000 available to depositors under the FDIC’s general deposit insurance rules.
The term “noninterest-bearing transaction account” includes a traditional checking account or demand deposit account on which the insured depository institution pays no interest. It also includes Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts ("IOLTAs"). It does not include other accounts, such as traditional checking or demand deposit accounts that may earn interest, NOW accounts, or money-market deposit accounts.
For more Information about temporary FDIC insurance, visit www.fdic.gov.
What is FDIC insurance?
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is an independent agency of the U.S. government that protects you against the loss of your deposits if any FDIC-insured bank or savings association fails. There is no need to apply for FDIC insurance – coverage is automatic and backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.
How does FDIC insurance work?
To learn how FDIC insurance works, visit the agency’s web site at www.myfdicinsurance.gov. There you’ll find a wide range of resources including a series of Frequently Asked Questions. You may also call the FDIC at:
- 877-ASKFDIC (877-275-3342)
- TDD: 800-925-4618
Are Charter Bank IRA CDs FDIC insured?
Yes. Certificates of Deposit, savings accounts and insured money market accounts held in a Charter Bank IRA are FDIC-insured for up to $250,000 per depositor. This is in addition to any FDIC insurance on your other Charter Bank deposit accounts.
